Mistral Large 4 is here, with a caveat and a promise. The caveat: it is a public preview, not a GA release. The promise: open weights by the end of October 2026.

Preview pricing runs around $1.36/$4.18 per million tokens, competitive with the mid-tier frontier and well under the Western flagship bracket. Medium 3.5 (April 28) remains Mistral's GA workhorse while Large 4 is in preview.

Why the weights are the story

A current-generation European open-weight flagship would reshape self-hosting shortlists that DeepSeek's MIT releases have dominated all year. Until the weights and license are public, though, Large 4 is an API you can evaluate and a roadmap you cannot yet rely on.
